Description

Cloudtap's Scaleclear water conditioners protect your pipes, appliances, and glass/tapware from limescale and hard water damage without stripping healthy minerals or increasing sodium levels in your drinking water.

Scaleclear is salt-free, electricity-free, and doesn't require ongoing maintenance—once it's installed, you can forget about it for over a decade!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Scaleclear deals with limescale at the source, restructuring hard water to prevent damage without stripping away healthy minerals.

Limescale and hard water damage are primarily caused by calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a naturally occurring mineral that's present in most Australian water supplies. Having CaCO₃ in your water isn't necessarily a bad thing; it promotes healthier bones, helps with heartburn, and is generally one of the many minerals our bodies need to operate properly.

The issue comes from what those minerals turn into. When CaCO3 molecules in your water undergo changes in pressure (like coming out of your tap) or temperature (like flowing near the heating element in a kettle or coffee machine), they crystallise. Under normal freshwater conditions, CaCO3 turns into a crystal called calcite, which is mainly what those stubborn scale deposits on your kettles and shower screens are made of. When hard water full of calcite crystals is left to dry, the water evaporates, but the crystals remain in place. Their spiky structure makes them stick to various surfaces (including other calcite crystals), requiring considerable elbow grease and dedicated cleaning products to clear away.

Rather than removing CaCO3 altogether, Scaleclear changes the conditions that tell the molecules how to crystallise. The catalytic spiral alloy inside Scaleclear's chamber disrupts and excites the water, restructuring the molecules so that they behave differently when the water pressure or temperature changes. Instead of clinging calcite, the CaCO3 forms a smoother crystal called aragonite. These crystals don't bond to surfaces or stick together like calcite, leaving only a soft powdery residue that wipes away first try.

SCALECLEAR VS SOFTENERS

Scaleclear is not a water softener. Softeners actively reduce a water's "hardness" by removing some of its CaCO3 content, typically through an ion exchange process that pulls in and traps calcium and magnesium ions before they can form crystals. Softeners are usually large external appliances that require salt and electricity, but some whole-home filtration systems use a sodium-based resin cartridge to achieve the same effect.

Softeners can be highly effective for reducing limescale, but each method has its pros and cons. Powered softeners can handle extreme hardness in bore water or high-CaCO3 areas (over 200mg/L), but they require constant electricity and produce concentrated salty wastewater that can be difficult to dispose of without disrupting the environment. Resin cartridges don't produce wastewater and typically run entirely on water pressure, but that simplicity comes at the cost of efficacy; most resin cartridges are only rated for hardness levels up to 120mg/L, so they're easily overwhelmed in areas that need softeners the most. Additionally, once all the sodium ions in the resin are used up, the cartridge is useless, so you may end up buying replacements every few months and sending the old ones straight to landfill.

Scaleclear is a water conditioner. It leaves the CaCO3 intact, but conditions the minerals to reduce hard water headaches. It doesn't require power or salt, doesn't produce any waste, and will last upwards of 10 years without any maintenance or cartridge replacements. It's also rated for hardness up to 1300mg/L, so it can handle anything Australia's mineral-rich water throws at it.

Product details

Scaleclear water conditioner for hard water. Can be integrated into a new whole-home filtration system, retrofitted into an existing setup, or installed as a standalone product.

IMPORTANT: The "high flow" and "low flow" model names refer to the required flow rates for triggering the catalytic reaction inside each model, not how much the unit will restrict your water pressure. Make sure you are purchasing the model best suited to your home's flow rate (see below).

Pressure: 1-1600 kPa

Hardness: 60-1300 mg/L

Optimal temperature: 1-20 ℃

Required flow rate (low-flow model): 3-25 L/min

Required flow rate (high-flow model): 24-54 L/min

WaterMark certificate: WM23531

HOW TO CHECK YOUR FLOW RATE:

1. Take a 9-10L bucket or other large container to an outdoor tap. Any container will do as long as you know its exact capacity.

2. Turn the tap on as far as it will go and time how long it takes to fill the container.

3. Calculate the flow rate using this formula: (Litres / seconds to fill) x 60 = L/min.

For example, if a 9L bucket takes 25 seconds to fill, your formula would be (9/25) x 60, giving a flow rate of 21.6 L/min. This falls within the Low Flow model's 3-25 L/min range, so that's the option that would have the best results for your home.

However, if that same bucket filled up in only 20 seconds, the formula would be (9/20) x 60, giving a faster rate of 27 L/min. This is above the minimum threshold for the High Flow model to be effective, so that's the option you would choose for that flow rate.

INSTALLATION

Both Scaleclear conditioner models can be installed at any exposed point along your home's mains pipe, regardless of whether or not you have a Cloudtap filtration system.

A licensed plumber will remove a short section of pipe, replacing it with the Scaleclear unit.

We recommend installing Scaleclear in a shaded or covered area to reduce direct sunlight, as frequent high temperatures may reduce conditioning performance.

For specific installation instructions, download the guide found in the Manuals & Resources tab. Instructions are also included in the box when you purchase a Scaleclear unit.

Product Code: CT-SCLF (low flow) / CT-SCHF (high-flow)

Warranty

Cloudtap's Scaleclear conditioners are protected by a 10 year warranty (1 year parts and labour, 9 years parts only). Direct all warranty queries to info@cloudtap.com.au or call (08) 9202 6909.

Scaleclear conditioners should only be installed by a licensed plumber. Ensure you have selected the correct Scaleclear model for your home's flow rate prior to installation (as per the Product Details tab). Protection from direct sunlight is recommended.
